32 by 32 – An Idea Stolen From Stacy

My friend Stacy recently posted something that I think is a great idea. She plans on losing 33 pounds in time for her 33rd birthday. As it so happens, we share a birthday — December 20th — though she is a year older than I am.* Since I have been tired of being overweight for quite some time, I figure now is as good a time as any to try again, and I plan on losing 32 pounds by my 32nd birthday.  A 32nd birthday isn’t special for any reason. It’s not as benchmark-y as others prior to this (18th, 21st, 30th, etc) or those yet to come (40th, 50th, etc), but it does have a nice round number to it.

*I know you aren’t supposed to talk about a woman’s age, but she brought it up first, so it’s probably okay.

It’s not only going to be about weight-loss for me. Hopefully, that will just be an added bonus to some changes I plan on making in my life. I’ve tried a bunch of other times with mixed results. Since I am currently at my highest weight ever — give or take a few pounds — it is a good time to start tracking again. A personal set back a few months ago caused me to get off track on my previous attempt to get things in order. But no more excuses. A few of the things I plan on “fixing” this time around:

  • Time to be more active. I started walking an hour a day last week, something that didn’t quite happen last week as planned. Nevertheless, I’m going to be doing at least an hour a day, walking at first, with eventual plans to start running in by September.
  • In order to walk an hour a day, I am going to get up earlier in the morning, which means going to bed earlier. I function better with sleep anyway, so it only stands to benefit me to get more sleep.
  • I’m not starting another diet per se, but I am going to focus on eating a lot better, primarily focusing on eliminating fast food and my late night trips to get tasty ice cream. I don’t want to punish myself, which leads to cheating, so it might be better to just be a little more conscious of what I’m eating.

So there you have it. I have about four and a half months to lose 32 pounds. If I get super ambitious, I can probably get to 50 pounds, but 32 would be nice enough. I would be under that horrible 300 pound mark again, and on my way to my ultimate goal of around 230. Maybe I can hit that mark by my 33rd birthday. Only way to find out is to try.

Until next time…
